The Metaverse Facebook Will Change The Game Rules

Think about living in the 1990s. Someone tells you that in 10 years, you will be able to buy books from your home without having to talk to anyone. Photos or “stories” could mean that at some point, you’ll be able to show everyone your whole life.

You would have thought that “that someone” was crazy.

Today is like the internet in the 1990s.

What could happen? Nobody knows for sure.

In the past, no one thought that Nokia would fail in the next decade.

With the considerable hype and because I didn’t have anything else to do, I thought I’d try to list a few different ways the Metaverse could be used.

What Can You Do in the Metaverse?

Let’s start defining what the Metaverse is.

Idea: It’s effortless. If social media have made your profile public, the Metaverse will make your avatar public, or even better, you.

So, here is a list of what the Metaverse claims to help you do.

1. Videogames

Shall we? Video games will be a lot different because of this new technology.

Activision Blizzard was recently bought by Microsoft, which goes in that direction. Imagine not just playing World of Warcraft but taking part in a raid with 50 or more people and everything being run by Azure (Microsoft Cloud).

This opens up a new way of having fun, which is kind of like what Nintendo’s Wii did in 2006.

If you’re at home, you can join a raid with your computer, console, or smartphone!

2. Events / Concerts / Sports / Cinema

This use of the Metaverse was a must because of Covid pandemic restrictions.

Idea: It’s effortless.

An artist’s avatar is projected into a virtual world that is in sync with the playing music.

People like The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and Ariana Grande have already tried this. This isn’t the first time video games have helped move the Metaverse closer.

As you can imagine, the first group is young people, but it could be a lot bigger.

If I were making a concert, I don’t think this would change how they’re made at all.

Another exciting thing I see is sports. Today, we are used to sitting on the couch and watching a football game on the TV. But what if we could be at the football game with our favorite player and see what he sees?

I think there could be more to be done.

3. Tourism

Today, I don’t want to stay at home. I want to go to the North Pole. You could go to the Caribbean Sea or go to the beach. Alternatively, you could go out into the open air and watch a lion in the wild! Or I could go to Venice’s Carnevale from the comfort of my own home!

What do I know? I’m not that kind of person. I have heard that the Metaverse could help you have more exciting experiences from the comfort of your own home.

It’s still weird to go to the North Pole and not feel cold at all. It’s half of the fun!

Museums might be able to benefit a lot from this. Many people are in front of the Gioconda, but what if you could see it without them?

4. Smart Working

With the Covid pandemic, we all felt the pain of being put on lockdown. The lucky ones who kept working had to use apps like Zoom, Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meet to make sure everyone was on the same page.

There were many times when I was in meetings where someone asked a question, but no one answered because the question wasn’t obvious.

Instead, imagine that you’re at a virtual meeting and someone asks a question while looking at you. You have to answer because you think people expect something from you.

So in this way, I think the Metaverse Facebook could make meetings better because it would let people meet from any place in the world.

During the second wave of thought, people won’t work on their PCs at home anymore. Instead, they will work on a “digital” PC in the Metaverse. Now, I don’t see programmers working all day with the oculus because it’s so heavy. They’re also not working “digitally” with the oculus. A mouse and keyboard are more comfortable to use than a controller right now.

5. Socialize

In the early 2000s, I used a program called Messenger that let you text your friends. I still remember how I used it. A future Reddit would be like this: People would talk live about a specific topic, then an NLP text summarization algorithm would give you a quick summary of what they talked about.

Besides, you could also look at a specific person when you were at a meeting, which is a big difference. This can make a big difference.

6. Weapon of Mass Control

Okay, so this one isn’t real, but did anyone happen to see Matrix? Also, I’d bet more on Neuralink to be a weapon that can control many people, but that’s just me.

7. Experiences

You could imagine being in a room to make a specific environment, like an escape room.

The Metaverse can make your experience even better and change it in a big way.

Conclusion

It’s right to be excited about the Metaverse because it could change our lives in a big way. It looks like Facebook changed its name to Meta, and Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard. These are early signs of what the fight to control the Metaverse will look like.

There are, in fact, a lot of businesses that want to help. Facebook was able to develop a new ad-based business model because it used a “text” based social media. As you can see, the Metaverse could provide more personal information and thus more targeted ads.

The value is huge.

If the Metaverse changes how Linkedin is used to find jobs, I wonder how that social media site could vary.

Sure, new Challengers would be able to raise money and beat the incumbent, right? No one thought Apple would one day start making phones in the past. But here we are.

It almost killed Nokia, which, by the way, is still alive and has tried out Augmented Reality a few years ago, but it didn’t work out. If the “Empire” fights back, we’ll find out!
