When comparing your SEO performance with that of your competitor’s, one crucial factor to consider is the number and quality of their backlinks. However, it can be challenging to find this information on your own (and time-consuming), so I will teach you how to do it in this post!

This article talks about SEO competitor backlinks and gives tips for success.

Backlinks

A backlink connects your website to a competitor’s. Backlinks play an important role in Google and other search engine algorithms. The more quality backlinks that your site has, the higher you will rank for specific keywords. It means that if someone searches for your key phrase on Google, then they will find you high up their results page! It also helps with branding and brings new visitors to your site, which can help grow sales, or whatever metric(s) are essential to you.

Backlinks have been shown time and time again by various SEO studies/reports/experiments to be a strong indicator of whether a website ranks highly or not, so it makes sense why this should be something we all want as much as possible.

Why you should care about competitor’s

I will now list a few reasons why you should be interested in finding out your competitor’s backlinks:

If They Have Good Authority

To see if they have an excellent authority link from industry-specific sites, which can help with SEO rankings.

If you find that their site has more than double the number of quality backlinks, then it may be time to reevaluate and improve your SEO strategy (and content!) to compete. Otherwise, there is no point because someone else has already done all the work! 🙂

Another Thing We Need To Do Anyway

It’s just another thing we need to do anyway, so we might as well get on top of sooner rather than later – this way, we don’t forget about it or leave things until the last minute again.

SEO Metric

It can be a helpful SEO metric to compare your SEO results with another site or benchmark yourself against them.

To find out where they are getting their backlinks will help us decide what types of sites we should try and get links from, too – maybe the same ones.

So now that I have pointed out some reasons why it’s important, let’s talk about how to do it.

You can use various tools for free, such as Linkody (my personal favorite), Majestic SEO, and Ahrefs. These allow you to see all the backlinks pointing towards any web page by simply putting its URL into one search box and pressing ”. You then receive a list of backlinks and see how many there are, which web pages they come from and who owns each of them.

While this is a good SEO tool to use, it can be time-consuming if we have to go through every link manually, so instead, I will teach you how to find your competitor’s SEO links using Google itself in the quickest way possible! This method involves searching for [keyword] + ‘site:’ followed by any URL with ” (replace that URL!). For example:

Let’s say you were wondering about finding out someone’s SEO competitor backlinks. Then what do you think would happen when you type this into Google?

You get a list of results where one line says something like ‘[website]’s Backlinks’!

So now you know how to find your SEO competitor’s backlinks PLUS. It has already given us some helpful information like the number of links, valid for benchmarking purposes. This method works very well because Google will only show relevant results, and due to SEO factors (which I won’t go into here), this means our competitor’s website(s). It also works if multiple sites are linking in, so we can pick any one of them!

A common mistake people make when finding their SEO competitive links is not sorting by ”. If you don’t sort by this, all the top-ranked websites on Google may have hundreds/thousands more than ours but quickly get many initial SEO results.

We have to pick the SEO links from our competitors that are good quality and try and get those links too. To summarize, you should be aware of SEO factors, create great content/webpages, and research SEO competitor backlinks, so you know what type of sites are best suited for getting a link from them.

Examples of how other people have used the strategy

Let’s take a look at the SEO competitor backlinks of Wikipedia, one of the most popular websites in the world.

I don’t think I need to explain why so many other sites are linking into it. However, people connect out even if they are not competing with another site because the content may help their visitors. Perhaps some SEO work was done on both sides, making this type of SEO competitive link building make sense (this happens more than you think).

Now let’s look at SEO competitor backlinks of my favorite blogging website, Medium.com.

You might recognize why it has so many links pointing towards it now? They have done this by creating unique content that people want to read and share before realizing they can also get SEO benefits from reading their articles. Medium publishes exciting content, and because multiple authors write on different topics, these websites are more likely to be linked to (meaning you benefit even if someone else owns the web page!). There aren’t any specific SEO factors for me to highlight in terms of SEO competitor backlinks for this one but, if you’re looking to create a similar website, then having SEO competitive links pointing towards it makes sense!

So there we have two examples of SEO competitor backlinks. One good example (in my opinion) and the other not so much. But I hope these give you an idea anyway? Now go out there and find your SEO competitor’s links today.

In Conclusion

If you want to know how your website is performing compared to competitors, it’s essential to consider the number and quality of their backlinks. It will give you a better understanding of where they get their traffic from and what strategies work best. To help you get started, I’ve outlined some tips on identifying good link sources that could drive more traffic and sales for your business.
